Gail Carriger bids Happy Retirement, My Pretties

In addition to getting rid of a number of dresses recently, I've also retired some items of clothing. I've either given them to friends, or put them into storage, because I can't quite part with them. I rarely store clothing. I simply don't have the space, but I do have a small wish fulfillment trunk for items that may fit me, post Rack-reduction. These are a few that made the "I love you too much to let you go forever" list.

Black & White Check Suit

I know, I'm sad to see it here too. So many memories. I adores this suit. Black and white, nice fabric, beautiful fit, pairs well with everything, lots of great memories. But the dress is too small for the Rack now (stop growing Rack!), and it requires so many repairs fuze would have to be employed, argh. I hate working with fuze.

In Frankfurt in the full suit, in Budapest with the dress part as a skirt and a belted top.

In Frankfurt with the dress paired with a cardy, and the jacked paired with my red dress.

And at the WorldCon where I was nominated for the Campbell 2010

Black & Green Cocktail Dress

I adore this tulip skirted I. Magnin dress. Adore it. But after the event pictured above, I broke the zipper. I can't stand repairing hidden zippers, so it's gone into retirement until I find a tailor I trust. It'll need a YKK. Also, it was tight over the chest at the time and I'd like to see if the zipper has any extra material to let out. It's a big sewing project.

Crazy Pink Gown

I got a great deal on this dress at $15, although it needed repairs, and then I really only intended to wear it for the one event. However, I did want to wear it again recently and found it no longer fit in the top. Because it is such a unique statement piece, I'm going to keep it for now.

Big White Hat

This is one of the ones I fitted with magnets to make it hold different colored flowers for any outfit. Unfortunately, it's hard to pack, and I so rarely have outdoor events, I never seem to wear it.

Black Gold Purse

This one is real vintage, possibly as old as the turn of the century. I inherited it from my great great grandmother. Unfortunately, it's so old the leather is dieing, and the handle snapped from pure age. It's going into the heritage trunk in storage, and I don't know what will happen to it in the end.

Purple Flower Blouse

A truly wonderful piece, but it's slightly too small all over. I'm considering passing it over to a truly skilled seamstress to deconstruct, pattern, and size up into muslin. Get a fitting, and then commission a whole bucket load in various different fabrics and colors. The fit is that stunning on a really curvy girl, it might be worth the expense, but the blouse itself would be destroyed in the process.

Green Miz Mooz Booties

I actually didn't retire these, I had them died chocolate brown. Don't get me wrong I adore the green, but they didn't go with anything in my wardrobe so I wasn't wearing them. Now they go with a bunch of my steampunk stuff, not to mention everyday, so I'll be in them more often.

Gail Carriger in a Red Wiggle Dress in San Antonio, WorldCon 2013 Outfit Report: Day 4

For Sunday evening, to celebrate the Hugos, I donned my Jessica Wiggle Dress.

I know, funny expression and my feet are cut off. But you can pretty much see the outfit. This dress is not vintage but it travels great, is a kind of stiff thick stretch material that really holds a girl in place, which I love.

Unfortunately it also boosts the Rack up in a manner I don't really require. Sigh. And as the evening went on I got quite hot.

So off came the cute sweater and out popped the Rack. (Yes that's a business card tucked in there. It's totally automatic. I never have pockets but I always have cleavage so I tend to carry things in that most convenient place, as it were.) Isn't Adam's suit divine? Can you see the patterned piping? Absolutely chic.

Sad to be so hot, because I thought the accessories were super cute. The cardy is cashmere vintage, being unable to wear wool I have a terrible weakness for cashmere. (I actually resisted this sweater for it was $80, but then I kept thinking about it so I went back and bought it. I've not regretted it and I wear it all the time.) The red octopus necklace was a gift from a reader and the earrings are part of a set I picked up at It's a Wrap in LA.

Devi sporting my glasses
Speaking of Devi, here she is with Campbell winning Mur both of them beautifully dressed. I'm so proud.

And we can't neglect the boys.

You see? It is possible. How handsome they look!

Hugos are always fun because some people, at least, really dress up. I could people watch this night of nights forever. It makes me so happy to see everyone all swanky and sparkly.
